How it Works
- Subway lines use colors, letters, and numbers to show shared routes, with colors grouping lines that run along the same major streets.
- Trains can run either locally or Express
- Local: Circle
- Express: Diamond
- Trains go Uptown or Downtown, their destination will be displayed on the train itself.
- On the map displayed on each train, you will find solid dots for local-only stops and hollow dots for express stops.
Manhattan-Bound Trains
- A "Manhattan-bound" typically heads into Manhattan, from Queens or Brooklyn.
- Some major lines are
- A, C, E (from Queens/Brooklyn)
- 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 (from Bronx/Brooklyn/Queens)
- B, D (from Bronx/Brooklyn)
- It’s important to pay attention if the train will go uptown or downtown
Queens-Bound Trains
- Queens-bound trains include the A, C, E, F, M, R, 7, J
- Some of theses trains move through different parts of Queens like Jamaica Center, Far Rockaway, Flushing, Astoria, and Forest Hills and go into Manhattan or brooklyn.
- Depending on your stop, you can use different stations as transfer points to get to your destination much faster.
Uptown Vs. Downtown
- Uptown means you are heading North towards higher street numbers, like 42nd St to 96th St or into Queens or The Bronx.
- Downtown means you are heading South towards lower street numbers or into Brooklyn.
